  • Period of Eligibility
    Students may become eligible for membership in the National Honor Society at the beginning of the second semester of their sophomore year.

  • Academics
    Students must have and maintain a 3.0 unweighted GPA.

  • Service
    It will be necessary for a student to document through the school Guidance Office, 30 hours of community service from the time of the student's entry into high school, to be eligible for NHS membership.

  • Character
    Students must be of good character and there cannot be documentation of disciplinary action taken by the school, community or state for serious or persistent misconduct on the part of the student.

  • Leadership
    Achievement in the area of Leadership will be determined by any combination of two of the following:
    1. Documentation of election, appointment or experience in a leadership position in a school sponsored organization or function from an adult involved with the organization or function, or a school administrator.
    2. A letter of recommendation from a community leader, a religious leader or an employer documenting a specific instance in which the student demonstrated leadership.
    3. A letter of recommendation from a teacher, administrator or other school staff member documenting a specific instance in which the student demonstrated leadership.
      • * Acceptable phrases for leadership recommendations are:
        Holds Office, Chairs committee, Team Captain, In Charge of . . . , Manager of . . . , Co-director of . . . , devised a system, editor, teacher of . . . , coach of . . . , board officer, implemented project.
      • * Non-acceptable words for leadership recommendations are:
    4. Student cannot have a paper trail of misconduct.
    5. Babysitter, good participant, being responsible, assisting peers with work, has leadership potential.
    6. Need administrative approval in application.
