Competition Breakdown
A large part of BPA revolves around competitions. BPA holds competitions at the regional, state, and national level each year. Regional competition takes place in school during November. Students miss the first half of the day to compete in several events in a variety of categories, all pertaining to skills that they learn in their business classes.

Students who place at the regional competition (1st for team or performance events, top 3 for individual events) are given the opportunity to advance to the state conference (SLC). The SLC is held each year in Orlando, FL where the top students from each region come together for one weekend to compete. The competition as this level is more difficult and certainly more competitive than at the regional level. In 2007, 29 delegates attended the SLC from CSHS. In 2008, 38 delegates attended the SLC.

The top students in each category from the SLC are given the chance to advance to the National Leadership Conference, or "Nationals". The NLC is held in a different place every year. In 2006 it was held in Anaheim, CA. In 2007 it was held in NYC, NY, and this May it will be held in Reno, NV. Students spend 5-6 days at a hotel touring the city and competing for the hopes of being able to be called upon stage and awarded. In 2007 three students from CSHS were recognized at the NLC - Tim Foster placed first place in Banking and Finance, Jason Bessette placed second in Payroll Accounting, and Craig Robinson placed in the top 10 for Computerized Accounting. In 2008 Jason Bessette placed first in Financial Math and Analysis and fifth in Payroll Accounting.

Competitions are broken down into four categories:

  • Administrative Support - This category is recommended for students that have taken Computing for College & Careers (previously Keyboarding/Computer Skills), Business Software, Legal Aspects of Business, or HOSA.
  • Financial Services - Recommended for students in the accounting or economics classes. There are several events in this category; however, accounting is recommended before participation.
  • Information Technology - Recommended for students studying web design or computer programming.
  • Management/Marketing/Human Services - Recommended for students in several different business/technology courses.
