Aerospace Science: Frontiers of Aviation

This course provides historical perspectives of aerospace from ancient legends through modern aerospace. It emphasizes the role of the military and evolution and importance of air power in US history. Current political and military thought such as deterrence, triad, limited and general warfare, and other political implications of aerospace are introduced. WWII and Korean War strategies, battles, campaigns are viewed and discussed. The general defense structure of the US is studied emphasizing organization and the subject matter. Additionally, Leadership Lab I is included in this course introducing Air Force customs and courtesies, proper wear of the uniform, basic drill skills, study habits and time management.
Aerospace Science II: Exploration of Space
Credit: 1; Grades: 10 - 12
The second year of Aerospace Science is a science course that discusses manned space flight, principles of propulsion systems, fundamentals of rocketry and its application to spacecraft, principles underlying space travel, and various aspect of space exploration. An depth study of Projects Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, US Space Shuttle and the International Space Shuttle and the International Space Station is included. Additionally, artificial satellites and interplanetary space probes are researched. Leadership Lab II is included in this course introducing communication skills and cadet corps. activities. Written reports and speeches compliment academic materials. Drill and Ceremonies are emphasized in this year., Cadets may expect to perform in mid-level NCO positions.
PREREQUISITE: Completion of Aero Science I and Instructor Approval
Aerospace Science III: Principles of Flight
Credit: 1; Grades: 11 - 12
This third year course is designed to acquaint the student with the aerospace environment, the principles of flight and navigation, and human limitations of flight. The course begins with a discussion of the atmosphere and the weather. After developing an understanding of the environment, how that environment affects flight is introduced. Discussions include the forces of lift, thrust, drag, and weight. Cadets also learn basic navigation including map reading, Requirements of Flight is a survey course on human physiology. Discussed here are the human circulatory systems, the effects of acceleration and deceleration, and protective equipment. additionally, Leadership Lab III is included in this course emphasizing communication skills, cadet corps. management and leadership, drill and ceremonies. Third year cadets are generally promoted to leadership positions as cadet officers.
PREREQUISITE: Completion of Aero Science I and II, and Instructor approval.
Aerospace Science IV: Life after High School
Credit: 1; Grade: 12
Subjects covered in this course include civil aviation's primary features and impact on our society; careers available in the civil and military aerospace community. This information sets the stage for discussion and in-depth research into careers in aerospace. Additionally, Leadership Lab IV is included in this course where emphasis is placed on which path tot take after high school with information on how to apply for admission to college, how to begin the job search and including filling out the job application, writing the resume, and how to prepare for the job interview. Written and oral presentations are exercised frequently. Leadership hours fine tune developing communication skills and top level cadet corps. positions provide a laboratory to experiment with newly learned leadership and management skills. Fourth year cadets will generally be promoted to high-level leadership positions and senior officer rank.
PREREQUISITE: Completion of Aero Science I, II, III, and Instructor approval.
Advanced Aerospace Science: Cadet Corp Management
Credit: 1; Grade: 12
This course is reserved for cadets that have proven outstanding performance in previous Aero Science courses. Selected will manage the entire Cadet Corp under direct supervision of the SASI and ASI. This hands-on course will give the cadets the opportunity to put the theories of previous Aero and Leadership courses into action. Cadets will be "coached" on planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, controlling, and decision-making concerning all aspects of the cadet corps. operations and activities. Written and oral communication is critical. Cadets will be promoted to the senior cadet officer rank and will accomplish all tasks assigned to them by the SASI.
PREREQUISITE: Overall GPA of 3.0 or better, Outstanding cadet record, completion of Aero Science I through IV, and SASI approval.
Honors Program - Pilot Ground School
Credit: 1; Grade: 12
This option is offered only to select AS IV and Advanced Aero Science Cadets. The material covered is an advanced (College level), in-depth study of the previous aerospace topics. This course is the foundation for students interested in receiving a private pilot's license. When the course is completed the cadet would be prepared to take and pass the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) written exam. Cadets will qualify and be awarded AFJROTC Ground School Wings.
PREREQUISITE: Instructor approval, GPA of 3.0 or better, Outstanding AFJROTC record, and enrolled in either AS IV or Advanced Aerospace Science.
